Section 1: Task 2 Overview

IELTS Writing Task 2 is an ESSAY (250+ words, 40 minutes). It's worth DOUBLE Task 1 marks.

Requirements

  • Minimum: 250 words (aim 280-320)

Standard Essay Structure

Introduction (2-3 sentences): Paraphrase + thesis

Body 1 (4-5 sentences): Idea 1 + example

Body 2 (4-5 sentences): Idea 2 + example

Conclusion (2-3 sentences): Restate + final thought

Section 2: 5 Question Types

CRITICAL: 50% of Band 5 essays fail because students don't answer the right question type!

Type 1: Opinion (Agree/Disagree)

Stem: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Structure: Intro (paraphrase + "I believe...") → Body 1 → Body 2 → Conclusion

Type 2: Discussion (Both Views)

Stem: "Discuss both views and give your opinion"

Structure: Intro → Body 1 (View A) → Body 2 (View B) → Conclusion (your opinion)

Type 3: Problem-Solution

Stem: "What problems? What solutions?"

Structure: Intro → Body 1 (problems) → Body 2 (solutions) → Conclusion

Type 4: Two-Part Question

Stem: "Why is this? What effects?"

Structure: Intro → Body 1 (answer part 1) → Body 2 (answer part 2) → Conclusion

Type 5: Advantages-Disadvantages

Stem: "Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?"

Structure: Intro → Body 1 (advantages) → Body 2 (disadvantages) → Conclusion (judgment)

Section 5: Top 10 Mistakes Arab Students Make

These 10 mistakes account for 70% of Band 5 essays. Fix them = instant Band 6-7!

1-5: Content Mistakes

1. Off-Topic: Answering a different question than asked. FIX: Reread the question 3 times.

2. No Clear Position: Essay discusses X and Y but doesn't say what YOU think. FIX: Always include "I believe..." or "I argue that..."

3. Personal Anecdotes: Using "My friend said..." instead of general examples. FIX: Use "Research shows...", "Studies indicate..."

4. No Examples/Evidence: Making claims without proof. FIX: Every claim needs an example or data.

5. Only One Part Answered: For two-part questions, answering only one part. FIX: Use 2 body paragraphs!

6-10: Language Mistakes

6. Repetitive Vocabulary: Using same words repeatedly (technology, important, good). FIX: Use synonyms!

7. Memorized Phrases: "In today's modern world", "Last but not least". FIX: Write naturally!

8. Informal Language: Using "like", "kinda", "gonna", "tbh". FIX: Academic English only!

9. Same Sentence Starters: "Technology is...", "Technology has...", "Technology can...". FIX: Vary your starters!

10. Under 250 Words: Submitting 240 words gets automatic penalty. FIX: Aim for 280-320!
